A sophomore at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, CA, Derek Zhang excels in sports as well as music.  He is a first prizewinner of the North California Young Talents Competition, performed as soloist with East Bay Chamber Orchestra, and participates in ASTACAP examinations.  Derek toured Europe last summer as first violinist with the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra and is currently first violin in the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra.  An equally skilled pianist, he has won several awards in piano competitions.
