Harry Chen, piano
Harry is 12. He is currently in 6th grade. He is a piano student of Dr. Anna Ouspenskaya since the Fall of 2016. He won 2nd place for the Arts of Piano International Competition 2018, with his Petite Concerto for Piano by Samonov. He won 1st place for the Piano Concerto Festival 2019 of NVMTA, with his Haydn Piano Concertino in F Major, Hob XVIII: F2, Movement 1. The same piece also won him 2nd place for The Best Haydn Performance International Competition 2019 and the Music of Germany and Austria International Competition. He also won 2nd place for The Best Bach Performance International Competition 2019, with his Musette. He performed Kabalevsky’s Easy Variations on a Russian Folk Song at Carnegie Hall May 2019 and won 3rd place in Grand Prizes. In 2020, he won 2nd place in American Fine Arts Festival with his Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 8, in C major K.246 1st movement. He is among the semifinalists in the International Sound Expressivo Competition in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, he won 3rd place for the Best of Mozart Performance with his Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 5, Movements 1 & 2. He also won 2nd place for the Best of Tchaikovsky Performance with his Neopolitan Song, as well as 2nd place for the Best Instrumental Music (Piano) with The Cat and the Mouse by Aaron Copland. He also won 1st place for the Best Kabalevsky Performance with his Youth Concerto (1st movement). In 2023, he won 2nd place for American Music Talent Competition, 3rd place for Glory International Music Competition and Honorable Mention in NVMTA ConcertoFest Competition. He played Berkovich Variations on a Theme of Paganini at Carnegie Hall in May 2023. The same piece also won him 1st place for the Ukrainian Music Competition, and he is scheduled to perform a piece by Akimenko at Carnegie Hall in Jan 2024. He won 1st place for American Fine Arts Festival International Concerto Competition 2023 with Kabalevsky’s Youth Concerto (2nd Movement) and performed Mozart’s Turkish March at Carnegie Hall in November 2023. His Kabalevsky’s Youth Concerto (1st Movement) also won Honorable Mention in Knabe International Piano Concerto Competition 2023. In August 2023, he participated at the Talent Music Summer Courses and Festival at Brescia, Italy and played Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1, Movement 1 with the orchestra. Harry won first place in the 2024 concerto festival of NVMTA playing Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1, Movement 3. The same piece also earned him 2nd place in Sempre Musick International Concerto Competition 2024 which earned him a place to play with the orchestra in May 2024. He loves Symphonies No. 7 and 9 of Beethoven. His favorite concerto is Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto. Currently he is also learning violin, badminton, and ballet.
